The Body

The Body

The role of the body and how it determines experience is especially salient in visual mediums, such as film, because of both the vulnerability of being before the camera—exposed—and the act of being presented as an object to be confronted and engaged with. This objectified experience of being viewed can be subverted into subjectivity—and agency—on film. In depicting the body, artists showcase how it is to live embodied: exposing certain ways of being for the eyes of the other.
